Per a qualsevol gracienc, la plaça dels Encants. Aquí al bell mig de la plaça hi hagué plantat l'arbre de la Llibertat. Una teoria apuntada per JM.Sucre assegura que al veí carrer del Canó hi havia una societat lligada amb la masoneria que tenien un canó en propietat. Durant l'algarada de les quintes (1870) foren detinguts i afusellats a la plaça del sol. Des del 1849, sempre ha tingut el mateix nom. Una altra explicació de l'arbre de la Llibertat és la que sosté que l'arbre fou plantat per a commemorar la constitució de la Junta d'Armament i Defensa de la República.
Descripció
Creada a mitjans del segle XIX per esponjar les construccions de la vila, és avui en dia el lloc de trobada per excel·lència dels joves que van a Gràcia. La dotzena de bars que hi ha instal·lats, en són un bon reclam. El 1999 esclatava el conflicte entre els propietaris dels bars de la plaça i els veïns, que a través de les pancartes penjades als balcons, mostraven el seu rebuig al soroll i la brutícia creixent de l'espai.
La remodelació de 1986 feta pels arquitectes Jaume Bach i Gabriel Mora va convertir la plaça en dura, trobant-hi un refugi anti-aeri de la guerra civil al seu interior, creat conjuntament per l'Ajuntament de Barcelona i la Junta de Defensa Passiva. Avui en dia, però , d'aquest refugi no se'n conserva res, ja que es va substituïr per un pàrking. Com a detall la plaça té una marquesina a la seva vessant sud-oest, i a l'oposada, l'escultura Astrolabi, de Joaquim Camps, que representa un rellotge de sol amb els 12 signes del zodíac.
